A Theater for Young Audiences Comedy, by Monica Flory

Playscripts, Inc. 2007, Full-length, 60-75 minutes

SET: A New York City apartment and a “Pandora’s Box” big enough to contain 5 actors.

TIME: Present    SYNOPSIS:

Once upon a time in New York City, Tabitha and her brother Louis discover a box sitting in the hall of their apartment. Curious, Tabitha opens the box, allowing five imprisoned fairy tale villains to escape. Free at last, the dastardly villains begin to wreck the apartment, but when they discover that writing in Tabitha’s notebook will give them control of other fictional characters, things really get dicey. Will Tabitha harness the power of her storytelling? Or will the fairy tale villains run wild in New York? A clever comedy that demonstrates the importance of the villains in every story.

 CAST of CHARACTERS:

TABITHA, a bright girl who loves to write stories; charming and a bit high-strung:  8 – 12.

LOUIS, Tabitha’s older brother who loves soccer and video games:  10 – 14.

ZEUS, the terrifying, yet handsome and charming, God of all Gods; the one who captures each fairy tale character and puts them in Pandora’s Box, just because he feels like it: 30 – 50.

QUEEN, The Evil Queen from Snow White; the embodiment of evil beauty and vanity: 30-50.

WOLF, the villain from Little Red Riding Hood, constantly hungry to the point of utter gluttony. Children are a favorite delicacy: 25-50.

RUMPLE, from Rumplestiltskin, who cannot understand how everyone already knows his name; he is angry to the core, given to childish tantrums and ridiculous outbursts: 30-60.

WITCH, the witch from Hansel and Gretel, who lures children with her candy house; a ferocious dictator: 30-60.

FAIRY, the thirteenth fairy from Sleeping Beauty; is jealous and extremely insecure and clumsy, but cute. Can be a man or a woman: 15-30.

ANGELLA & BEAUTELLA, characters from a story Tabitha has written; the most loving sisters on the planet; “good” through and through; the love to sing, dance, and braid each other’s hair, but not much else:  15-25.

ESPERELLA, a gracious mother to Angella and Beautella in Tabitha’s story. Acts as Tabitha’s writing mentor:  40-60.

TRANSLATOR, to translate Zeus’ summary of the fairy tales at the beginning of the play. Man or woman, any age.

REPORTER, TV news reporter, telling of the havoc brought by the villains at the end of the play. Man or woman, 25 -50.

CHILDREN, various ages, a group of children surrounding ZEUS at the beginning of the play as he sets the stage by quickly re-telling the plot of the fairy tales. Children also serve as “props” in the retelling and respond appropriately to the scary parts of each story.
